The Beatles are, of course, one of the most important and iconic bands in the history of music. The band was formed in Liverpool, England in 1960. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Star are famous as the main members of this group. Markedly, they not only changed Rock and Roll music but they incited and supported the change society was going through in the 1960s.

After a number of performances in Hamburg, The Beatles returned to the UK. Here, following a run of shows at The Cavern Club, they were spotted by Brian Epstein, who would later go on to become the band’s official manager in 1962.

The Beatles’ first single ‘Love Me Do’ peaked at Number 17 on the Record Retailer Chart in October of the same year. At the same time, while sporting a new look, they became more serious about their music. Indeed, they would go on to release 12 studio LPs in an eight year period. Beatlemania

Beatlemania: It was in 1963, that a sharp-suited Beatles would record their first LP Please Please Me. This LP became a roaring success in the UK, peaking at number 1 in the charts. During extensive European tours that followed, thousands of fans flowed in the streets nightly outside the venues of their performances. This adoration of the band was dubbed Beatlemania. Consequently, 73 million viewers in the States paid tribute to their first television appearance on the Ed Sullivan show.

The Beatles went on to hold five places in the Billboard Top 100 which is still a record to this day. They achieved rapid success and a growing fan base. As an example, they played before a world record 55.600 fans on August 15th, 1965 at Shea Stadium.

However, playing live finally took its toll on the band. The Beatles after 4 years of constant recording and touring, had made over 1,400 appearances. Their last performance to the public took place at Candlestick Park, San Francisco in August 1966.

Studio Years

Music

Beatles: The band then took to the studio and had no further plans to tour. During this time, they became more experimental with their music. From late 1966 to 1970 the Beatles would go on to record and release an additional six studio LPs. The first of these releases was Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The unity of the band began to falter after the death of Brian Epstein. Tensions continued to accumulate.

Despite this, the Beatles still managed to occupy the top spot with four of their six releases during this period peaking at number 1 in the UK and five reaching number 1 in the US.

Tensions continued to become even more apparent. In the end, their final performance was held on the rooftops of Apple Corps on Savile Row, January 1969. Later in the year, just before The Beatles finally broke up in 1970, the worldwide number 1 album Abbey Road followed.
