The value of going to College is an issue everyone struggles with before making that decision. This is because it’s not an easy decision. First of all and probably foremost is the costs involved. Also it is your future after all. But, IS College Worth it?
As far as costs go, yearly tuition is expensive and rising each year. In addition, there are further costs in the event of living away from home; rent, transportation and food.

Considerations – Is College Worth it?
We can’t just jump into going to college, we must weigh our options; the pros and cons of studying 3 years or longer in a college or university.
Ultimate Goal: A career is the number 1 consideration for most. Why a career? Of course it’s to make an income and “secure” your future. Learning is important but few go solely for the purpose of learning.
A career decision is made usually around High School age. Unfortunately, based on limited experience, this is a difficult decision considering all the options available. And will this the right choice to spend the rest of you life in this endeavor?
Years ago, having a bachelor’s was rare and candidates with the degree could therefore be more choosy, were more in demand and were more expensive to hire. However, these days, with the large number of people harboring a a bachelor’s degree, this is no longer the case, In Fact, this has transformed a Master’s Degrees to the “new bachelor’s degrees.” Thus, more years studying and more costs.
That Elusive “JOB”
Let’s consider having gone to College and getting a job. Is College Worth It?
Hopefully the student makes the right choice to work at a place where the working conditions are favorable, enjoyable and provide stability, possibly a lifetime career. This is an unknown until you dive into this market.
Changing technology can completely wipe out certain types of employment opportunities. Long term stable employment is becoming more elusive. Indeed, loyalty is expected by the employer but these days that loyalty is not often reciprocated. Brick and mortar “institutions” are disappearing with the advent of online marketing.
Income is a big incentive. In a “job,” working for someone else, this option is somewhat limited. Indeed, you will make the person you are working for rich but few get “rich” as an employee based on their income. Certainly, the harder you work and the higher you rise in the organization the more money you are paid. Unfortunately, the more you rise in the organization the more the options quickly reduce. There is only so much room at the top and that presents a barrier to income growth.
Promotions are not always based on output (although performance can count). Office politics and employee favoritism becomes more of the judge of advancement potential. Added to this is the amount of experience your fellow employees have and how long before an opportunity will become available, if ever.
Other politics get into the fray as well if choose to be an employee. You are subject to the influences of the politics of making appointments in the work place. For example. age discrimination, gender base hiring, and hiring people with disabilities. Although these are worthwhile considerations, they can affect your hiring and position in the company and they can take away your options.
Time and Location – Is College Worth It?
A “Job” normally will dictate where you will be living instead of this being your choice. Unless your work involves a lot of travel, you will be residing in one place possibly for your life time. Too, the amount of vacation allotted to you is dictated by the employer; leaving you more time living in the one location. It’s important to note that living in one location isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but only if it is not by decree but by choice.
Finally, we all have 24 hours in the day and we get no more. When paid by salary or by the hour for your time, you can only make so much income. In light of this, time limits your income potential
Clearly there must be another answer.
Other Options
Use the advent of eCommerce to your advantage. At present, there are more than one billion people shopping online daily. And the number is growing rapidly. More and more people are shopping online world wide and with this comes growing opportunity.
